Göta Canal

Östergötland, SwedenCycling Verified details

A 190 km nineteenth-century canal with towpath cycling and lock flights.

Dug by hand between 1810 and 1832, the canal crosses Sweden from the Baltic to Vänern through 58 locks. The towpath is flat, car-free and one of the best family cycle rides in the country; the Berg lock flight at Linköping, where boats climb fifteen locks in a staircase, is worth an afternoon on its own. Boats, bikes and swimming spots share the same water.

  • 58 hand-dug locks
  • Flat car-free towpath
  • Berg lock staircase

Campsites that make a good base
