Neuschwanstein Castle

The castle that Disney borrowed from, begun in 1869 and never finished. Interiors are seen only on a timed guided tour of about 30 minutes, and tickets sell out days ahead in summer — book online. The best view is from the Marienbrücke bridge over the gorge, which is free and often closed in winter. Combine with the Alpsee lake below for a swim and a walk that redeems the queueing.
