Verona and the Arena
Veneto, ItalyCulture & history Verified details
A Roman amphitheatre still staging opera, half an hour from Lake Garda.
The Arena is a first-century Roman amphitheatre that never stopped being used: from June to September it stages open-air opera to 13,000 people, and the acoustics work without amplification. Outside the season you can walk the tiers for a few euros in half an hour. The old city around it — Piazza delle Erbe, the Castelvecchio bridge — makes a good half-day when the Garda beaches are too hot.
